Ring takes a turn

Image
More of the ongoing saga on making my first metalsmithed ring. I thought I'd have a complete ring to show this week, but, (of course) I made the band, and soldered nicely, to find..... the stone did not fit! I was very frustrated. So scratch the snowflake obsidian that I originally had. I could not find a stone in the teachers box of stones, so yesterday I went to a bead and shell shop that I had heard about, but was not sure where it was located. Jackpot. I found a piece of American turquoise, that is just a little larger than my bezel, so I filed it a bit, and I think we have a match! I just need to fit it in and finish the sides this week. A couple of new items in my shop this week: Sterling silver and pearl earrings-dangle Sterling silver coiled bracelet-boro beads-Thai silver shell beads That's all for now. Have a happy Saturday night!

Good morning Monday!

While I sit here with the plumbers, while they install a new hot water heater, that blew out yesterday, I had time to re-photograph some existing work to better pictures. Have a look: Taking pictures is my least favorite thing to do! And this beautiful strand of beads-now pictured better is also available in my supply shop , with a couple of new items to be added there as well. I made a really pretty bracelet yesterday...that will come later to show... And I've just ordered some new artisan made lampwork glass beads to work with. Wait till you see them! More new stuff on it's way!

Ring progress and shop update

And we have a bezel cup! Still, no ring yet. Again, I must say that this is much harder than it looks to make. I had to seal the back plate on at least 3 times to get it soldered right. Hopefully next week, we'll have a ring. I sure do hope so, as I'm getting tired of working on this piece! Good news! A shop update finally! These are now in my Etsy shop and ready for new homes. Not a ring, yet

As you can see, this is as far as I got last week in class. I picked a snowflake obsidian stone; made the bezel, and another decorative ring for the base of the bezel. Let me tell you, this was no easy task! It is painstaking and very much a precision and exacting thing to do. I admire all those metal smith's out there who have mastered the technique! Did I mention that the instructor is a perfectionist? And I want my work to be perfect! I have 4 new pairs of earrings- new designs that have come out beautifully. I'll be photographing and updating my ETsy shop later this week. Here's another technique that I was just playing around with to learn. I think it is called a "Peruvian thread" technique. It is quite pretty. I may make some earrings like this as well. Just a quick, drive by post today. It's been a long day and I'm really tired. Good night!
