Death row inmate Mitchell Rutledge finds God, himself, and a family of friends on the outside who help him succeed as a useful human being, despite his circumstances.
At age 16, illiterate, homeless, and finding himself alone and on the streets after his young mother dies, Mitch takes to the life of selling drugs and crime to survive. At age 18, he commits a murder and is convicted and sentenced to death, not once but twice. In his own words he tells his story, shares with us about life inside prison walls, (which is not what you see portrayed on television), how he found redemption and wanted to change his life and what he did to accomplish that.
After a negative Time magazine article about him, Mitch meets, through writing letters, Burt and Anita Folsom, who become years long friends who inspire Mitch over the years, but find that Mitch also inspire them too. They become Mitch’s “family” along with Lillian, and Pam and her family who also stay close to Mitch over the years.
This is a true story that shows the “power of the human spirit to triumph over adversity” as I quote from the book. It teaches us a lot about human nature, the power of God, and for me it shows that God is always in control. I loved reading this story and highly recommend it. I received this book from
