What juries want

Image
As promised, I wanted to finish my thoughts concerning getting into juried art shows. You may remember I made a mention of it last week here . I may be revealing some deep secret information here; I just don't know. Maybe it's just because I am still a novice at this stuff, and am learning as I go. I have applied to many shows. Many, that are juried events, requiring an artist to send in photos of their work and booth display. Well, I've had enough practice with photographing individual jewelry pieces for my Etsy shop , and must admit it has taken me about 3 years to finally get photos they way I want them. An I always thought a good booth shot would show, that, yes, I have a white tent. And a nice banner, plus of course, my work on display. WRONG- fine art juried events do not want to see your tent, or you, or your name in this shot. For jewelry artists, they want to see the jewelry display close up, to see how "esthetically pleasing" your display is. They are no...

Take your mother with you

So, another show under my belt for this season. Yesterday's show was not that great, and I may not consider this show again for fall 2012. It was quite busy, large crowds all day from opening at 9:00am until about 3:00pm when the crowds died down. The show was over at 4:00pm. There were more "craft type" booths than artisan booths. Lot's of handmade Christmas wreaths and decorations. I knew 3 other jewelry artists that were in this show and the general consensus was the same. I think my friend Carol, who does seed bead weaving, did well. Here's her booth: I went over a couple of times to check on her, since this was her first time putting up a tent all by herself. Now here's where Mom comes in. Every time I went away from my booth, my mom made a sale! So I kept going over and talking with the people that I know, and every time I came back, my mom sold something. It was quite the joke of the day. Well. until the next show, live and learn.

Just a reminder....

Just a simple reminder today about tomorrow's show in downtown Clearwater (for those of you who are local), I will be at the "Christmas under the oaks" show. There will be 3 other jewelry maker friends with their own booths as well. And hopefully my favorite soap maker will be there too! Stop back for my post show round up! Sorry, no pics today.

Last weekend's show

Image
It was a pretty good show, dispite the wind and lack of the expected crowd turnout. I had steady sales most of the day, but nothing that big. For a juried show, my expectations may have been a bit high. It was s windy, that I thought it would be a good idea to at least put up my back wall. Not a good idea. It served more like a sail, pulling the tent forward. Now I wish I would have bought the mesh curtains that I was thinking about buying before I made this investment. But the walls are needed also, especially if I'm doing a 2 day event. Here's a few photos from the show; early after set up- they are not the greatest. My booth neighbor: he makes metal sculptures from recycling old washing machines. The park was much smaller that I expected. Only about 25-30 booths. I did manage to get a custom order from this show, that I need to get working on this week. Then I have another show on Sunday. I'm in my state of creative chaos this week. I forgot that I had to work 3 days thi...

The day before the show

I'm all prepared and ready for tomorrow's show, "Art in the Park/Bungalowfest" If you are local and want to stop by, click on the link above for show details. Here are some more new pieces from me that I'll have available at the show. We should have nice weather tomorrow too!

Time crunch for show time

Today may be my last day to actually create anything new before my show on Saturday. I've been creating new jewelry like crazy! And I just found out that I will be working my "day" job an extra day this week to fill in for someone, so that leaves me with today. Friday will be my prep work for the show. I think this will be my first art show where they actually vote on and give monetary prices for the best of show. I had forgotten about that. How exciting! In case you are local, or will be in the St. Petersburg, Florida area this weekend I will be at the Art in the Park/Bungalowfest . And here are some new earrings that I will have available at the show. Hope to see you there! I should be in booth #5.
